FST-Syllabus

The Specialist in Functional Strength Training Clinic combines evidence-based theory with intensive practical application, enabling participants to understand the science of functional movement and confidently apply Functional Strength Training (FST) principles in professional practice.

Online Learning Components
The online component establishes the theoretical foundation required for the effective design and delivery of Functional Strength Training programmes. Participants will explore the concepts and principles underpinning modern functional training and gain an understanding of how these methods contribute to health, fitness, and sports performance.

Topics include:

Introduction to the theory and principles of Functional Training and Functional Strength Training.
Objectives and goals of Functional Strength Training in both general fitness and athletic settings.
The physiology of Functional Strength Training, including neuromuscular adaptations and energy system considerations.
The relevance and application of functional training in contemporary fitness practice.
Gary Gray's Theory of Chain Reaction®, including the concept of locomotion chains and three-dimensional movement.
Important considerations relating to safety, progression, regression, exercise selection, and client readiness.
Principles involved in designing Functional Strength Training programmes for diverse populations.

Understanding and applying the Functional Continuum, enabling trainers to select appropriate exercises according to individual needs and goals.

Offline Practical Components
The face-to-face practical sessions provide participants with the opportunity to develop coaching competence and practical proficiency through supervised instruction and hands-on experience.

Practical topics include:

Warm-up principles and movement preparation strategies.
Developing functional strength for the core musculature, lower body, and linear speed development.
Functional training techniques aimed at improving balance, coordination, stability, mobility, and agility.
Application of bodyweight and body-resistance exercises.
Training methods using agility ladders, mini hurdles, stability balls, balance discs, slide boards, and other functional training tools.
Functional Strength Training techniques using free weights, kettlebells, and resistance-based exercises.
Coaching cues, exercise progressions and regressions, spotting, and movement correction.
Integration of functional exercises into safe, effective, and goal-specific training sessions.

By integrating theory with practice, the clinic equips participants with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills required to deliver Functional Strength Training programmes across a wide range of fitness, health, and sports settings.
