IRA – Water Fitness & Conditioning

“Ira” (pronounced “eerah”) is the Sanskrit word for water. We have adopted this

IRA-image-1

Water fitness combines aerobic endurance exercise and resistance training in a shallow-water environment. Activities such as walking, jogging, running and rhythmic movement can raise the heart rate and increase oxygen consumption sufficiently to improve cardiovascular endurance. At the same time, the natural resistance of water can be used to train muscles in a manner similar to dumbbells, resistance bands and weight-training machines.

Shallow-water exercise is increasingly popular for five important reasons.

First, the buoyancy of water reduces impact and stress on the knees, hips, spine and other joints. Second, water provides resistance in every direction, helping develop muscular strength and endurance. Third, continuous movement offers an effective aerobic workout that improves cardiovascular fitness.

Fourth, exercises can be adapted for different ages and fitness levels, including beginners, older adults, people with obesity and, where medically appropriate, those returning to exercise after injury. Fifth, the cooling effect of water makes exercise refreshing and enjoyable, especially during hot weather.

Water fitness also allows several muscle groups and joints to work simultaneously, making it a versatile training format. For fitness professionals, it provides an excellent opportunity to re-skill, broaden their services and work with clients who may not enjoy or tolerate conventional land-based exercise.

Safety remains paramount: qualified professionals should train only clients who can swim confidently, conduct sessions in suitable shallow-water facilities and ensure that trained and certified lifeguards are present. This workshop equips fitness professionals with practical skills to plan and deliver safe, enjoyable and effective water-based aerobic and resistance-training sessions.

Our training program is designed to introduce fitness professionals to the exercise medium of water. Clients get to use a novel, safe exercise format while the trainers get an additional income opportunity.

“Ira” is being presented in India since 2017 and in the UAE since 2024.

We will shortly apply for REPS UAE’s CPD and European Standards’ EREPS Lifelong Learning approval.

Expand their professional services by confidently incorporating safe, effective water fitness into personal-training and group-exercise programmes.

This clinic is intended for professionals who work closely with individuals participating in exercise, fitness, and sport, where the possibility of training-related injuries and movement dysfunctions may arise. It is particularly relevant to practitioners who are responsible for designing, supervising, and progressing exercise programmes that promote both performance enhancement and safe participation.

The clinic is suitable for:

Personal Trainers
Pilates Teachers
Fitness Instructors and other Fitness Professionals
Physical Education Teachers
Strength and Conditioning Coaches
Sports Coaches

Given the advanced and applied nature of the clinic, participants are expected to possess a sound understanding of exercise physiology, kinesiology, anatomy, biomechanics, and the exercise sciences. Ideally, applicants should hold a recognised Level 3 or Level 4 Personal Training qualification and/or an appropriate graduate or postgraduate qualification in a related discipline. Equivalent professional experience and qualifications may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.

First Aid, CPR and AED Requirement
To be eligible for final certification, participants must successfully complete and obtain certification in Emergency First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) before the final assessment. This requirement helps ensure that graduates are prepared to respond appropriately to common medical emergencies that may arise during fitness, exercise, and sports activities.

General Requirements
Applicants should:

Have successfully completed a minimum of 10 years of formal school education.
Be physically and medically fit to participate safely in the practical components of the clinic.
Demonstrate a genuine interest and commitment towards fitness, exercise, health, rehabilitation, athletic performance, or sport.
Possess sufficient professional knowledge, practical experience, and maturity to engage meaningfully with the clinic's theoretical and practical content.
Be willing to participate actively in discussions, practical workshops, peer learning activities, and supervised coaching sessions.
Mandatorily have proven proficiency in swimming is mandatory.
Be free of known hydrophobia.

Professionals with physical disabilities are encouraged to apply. Applicants with relevant exposure to fitness, exercise, rehabilitation, or sport are welcome, provided they can participate safely and effectively in the learning activities and assessments.

Emergency First Aid, CPR and AED Requirement
To be eligible for final certification, all participants must hold a valid certification in Emergency First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) before undertaking the final assessment.

This requirement reflects best practice within the fitness and sports industries and ensures that graduates are prepared to recognise and respond appropriately to common medical emergencies that may occur during exercise sessions, sporting activities, and other physical activity environments. It further reinforces the professional responsibility of fitness practitioners to prioritise participant safety and duty of care at all times.

This specialist workshop prepares fitness professionals to plan, demonstrate and supervise safe shallow-water exercise sessions for aerobic endurance, muscular strength, endurance, mobility, balance and general conditioning.

The programme focuses on apparently healthy adults. Clients with diagnosed medical conditions, recent surgery, pregnancy-related complications or significant functional limitations require appropriate medical clearance and individualised exercise prescription. Fitness professionals must work within their qualifications and must not diagnose, treat or rehabilitate medical conditions independently.

Inability to enter, exit or remain safe in the water with available assistance

CDC advises people with diarrhoea to stay out of pools and recommends excluding or fully protecting open cuts and wounds. CDC healthy-swimming guidance

Conditions requiring clearance and individual modification

Condition Principal precautions
Hypertension Confirm control; avoid breath-holding and excessive intensity; monitor symptoms

Osteoporosis Avoid uncontrolled spinal flexion, forceful rotation and high-impact jumping where inappropriate
Joint replacement Obtain clearance; observe movement restrictions and safe entry and exit
Obesity Ensure suitable depth, balance support, equipment capacity and safe steps or ramp
Pregnancy Obtain obstetric guidance where indicated; avoid overheating, exhaustion and unsafe entry or exit
Neurological conditions Assess balance, cognition, sensation and seizure history; provide close supervision
Kidney disease or transplant Medical clearance; consider infection risk, fatigue, blood pressure and medication effects
Incontinence Follow facility hygiene policy; bowel incontinence or active diarrhoea precludes pool participation
Skin disorders Avoid participation when infectious, actively weeping or not safely covered

Module 8: Pool and Participant Safety

Pool-risk assessment before every session
Appropriate water depth and clearly marked boundaries
Non-slip deck and uncluttered entry areas
