FATEX-Syllabus
Introduction to Pre-Screening and Fitness Assessment
Participants will be introduced to the principles and procedures of pre-exercise screening and fitness assessment, enabling them to collect meaningful information and make informed exercise prescription decisions.
Topics include:
Purpose and importance of fitness assessment and testing.
Client consultation and interview techniques.
Completion and interpretation of health screening questionnaires, including the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q) and relevant informed consent documentation.
Identification of contraindications, risk factors, and referral considerations.
Selection of appropriate assessments based on client characteristics, goals, and exercise readiness.
Practical Fitness Assessment and Testing
Participants will gain hands-on experience in administering, recording, and interpreting a range of commonly used fitness assessments, including:
Anthropometric Assessments
Height and weight measurements
Body Mass Index (BMI)
Circumference measurements using measuring tapes
Waist-to-hip ratio
Body Composition Assessment
Skinfold thickness measurements using calipers
Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)
Interpretation of body composition data
Muscular Fitness Testing
Local muscular endurance tests
Limit (maximal) strength assessments
Selection of appropriate protocols for different populations
Flexibility and Range of Motion Assessment
Sit-and-Reach Test
Goniometric measurements
Joint range of motion evaluation
Cardiorespiratory Fitness Assessment
Aerobic endurance testing
Submaximal field-based assessment protocols
Monitoring heart rate and recovery responses
Balance and Functional Assessments
Static and dynamic body balance tests
Functional movement observations
Basic postural screening procedures
Interpretation and Reporting
Recording and analysing assessment findings
Establishing baseline values
Identifying strengths and limitations
Translating assessment results into safe, individualised exercise recommendations.
Upon completion, participants will be equipped to conduct comprehensive fitness assessments confidently and utilise the findings to support evidence-informed exercise prescription and programme design.
