IRA-Learning Outcomes By completing our IRA Water Fitness and Conditioning Workshop, participants should be able to: Explain the principles and benefits of aerobic endurance and resistance training in shallow water. Understand how buoyancy, water resistance, hydrostatic pressure and water temperature influence exercise and the human body. Demonstrate safe and effective shallow-water exercises for cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, endurance, mobility, balance and coordination. Use water dumbbells, pool noodles and other aquatic equipment correctly and safely. Apply appropriate posture, alignment, breathing and movement techniques during water-based exercise. Modify exercise intensity by changing movement speed, range of motion, surface area, leverage, direction and water depth. Plan structured sessions comprising a warm-up, aerobic conditioning, resistance training, mobility work, cool-down and recovery. Adapt exercises for different ages, abilities and fitness levels, including beginners, older adults and clients requiring low-impact exercise. Provide clear demonstrations, verbal instructions and corrective cues while supervising individuals and groups. Identify common risks, contraindications and warning signs associated with water-based exercise. Apply essential pool-safety procedures, including participant screening, hydration, safe entry and exit, emergency planning and lifeguard support. Assess participants’ needs and establish suitable fitness goals before designing a water-conditioning programme. Monitor exercise intensity using perceived exertion, talk tests, heart-rate response and observation of movement quality. Design enjoyable, progressive and goal-oriented water-fitness programmes for general fitness, weight management and physical conditioning. Expand their professional services by confidently incorporating safe, effective water fitness into personal-training and group-exercise programmes.
