Plyometrics is an exercise format that develops explosive power by combining speed and force in quick, purposeful movements. Common examples include jumps, hops, bounds, explosive push-ups and medicine ball throws. These exercises help people produce force rapidly, supporting movements used in sport and everyday physical activity.
Plyometric training uses the stretch-shortening cycle: muscles and tendons undergo a rapid stretch followed immediately by a forceful contraction. When appropriately selected and coached, these movements can improve jumping ability, acceleration and reactive strength. Combined with other training methods, they can support agility and sporting performance. Although demanding drills can raise the heart rate, plyometrics primarily develops explosive power rather than aerobic endurance.

Dr Yuri Verkhoshansky made pioneering contributions through his “Shock Method,” particularly the use of depth jumps. His research and coaching helped establish foundations for modern plyometric training and influenced strength and conditioning practice worldwide.
Plyometrics is often associated with competitive athletes, but suitable introductory exercises can also be incorporated into fitness programmes for other clients. Exercise selection must reflect each person’s strength, movement skills, training experience and physical readiness. Advanced drills require greater preparation and should follow a planned progression.
For personal trainers, understanding plyometrics is valuable when working with clients whose sports require power, agility and rapid changes of direction. Effective coaching involves more than asking clients to jump: it requires clear objectives, appropriate exercise choices, controlled landings, suitable training volume and sufficient recovery between efforts.
Selected plyometric activities may also feature in later rehabilitation stages, under the guidance of qualified rehabilitation professionals, when the individual is ready to return to demanding activity.
The guiding principle is quality before quantity. Begin with manageable movements, develop sound technique and progress gradually. Used appropriately within a balanced programme, plyometrics can help clients move more powerfully, respond more quickly and perform with confidence.
Role of Plyometrics in Strength and Speed Development
Our plyometrics technique and progression clinic will show attendees how to –
Develop explosive strength: Trains muscles to produce force rapidly during powerful movements.
Improve reactive strength: Builds the ability to switch quickly from absorbing force to producing force.
Enhance the stretch-shortening cycle: Helps muscles and tendons use stored elastic energy during rapid movements.
Increase rate of force development: Helps trainees generate useful force within the brief time available in sporting actions.
Support neuromuscular coordination: Improves the timing and coordination of muscle activity during explosive efforts.
Develop eccentric control: Trains muscles to absorb force when landing, braking or preparing to change direction.
Strengthen single-leg performance: Uses unilateral hops and bounds to develop power and control on each leg.
Build upper-body power: Uses explosive push-ups and medicine ball throws to develop rapid pushing and throwing actions.
Complement resistance training: Helps translate strength gained through weight training into faster, more powerful movement.
Develop repeated explosive ability: Appropriately structured drills help trainees sustain powerful efforts across repeated sporting actions.
Professional Recognition and Career Progression
REPS UAE Recognition
The Specialist in Plyometrics for Agility & Power clinic reflects our Academy’s efforts to offer educational quality and relevance to contemporary fitness practice, supporting lifelong learning, professional competence, and credibility within the fitness, exercise, health, sports conditioning, and related segments.
However, the true value of this clinic extends far beyond the CPD points awarded. For Personal Trainers, the programme provides practical tools and coaching strategies that can immediately enhance service delivery. Trainers learn how to design purposeful, movement-based programmes, improve exercise selection and coaching cues, progress and regress exercises appropriately, and address the real-life functional needs of diverse clients.
These competencies enable professionals to deliver more effective sessions, improve client outcomes, increase client retention, and differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
This workshop is an integral part of our Specialist in Advanced Strength Training program that is approved for 16 REPS UAE CPDs.
We will shortly apply to REPS UAE for a stand-alone CPD approval of this clinic.
European Standards Alignment

This clinic also forms an integral component of our Personal Training Education Programme, which is aligned with European Standards Level 4 professional competencies. The knowledge and skills developed through the clinic complement broader professional qualifications and support progression into advanced areas of practice.
Successful completion of the clinic contributes towards career development pathways within our:
Personal Training Qualifications
Strength and Sports Conditioning Qualifications
Bodybuilding Coaching Qualifications
Medical Exercise Qualifications
The practical and theoretical competencies acquired during this programme provide learners with a structured route towards enhanced professional recognition, career advancement, and expanded employment opportunities within the global fitness, wellness, sports performance, and rehabilitation sectors.
Graduates will develop a deeper understanding of how to apply functional resistance training principles safely and effectively across a wide range of populations. Whether working with athletes striving to optimise performance, fitness enthusiasts seeking improved health, children developing movement skills, older adults aiming to maintain independence, or individuals with specialised needs, participants will be better equipped to design, deliver, and supervise evidence-informed, goal-specific training programmes.
By combining internationally recognised professional development with immediately applicable coaching skills, this clinic empowers fitness professionals to become more competent practitioners and more valuable contributors to the health and performance of the communities they serve.
Programme Aim
To equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills to assess readiness, teach plyometric exercises and develop progressive programmes that support explosive strength, reactive ability, agility and sporting performance.
This technique and progression clinic offers the following benefits for Personal Trainers and S&C Coaches in Developing Trainee Performance
Improves exercise selection: Helps coaches choose drills that match the trainee’s goals, readiness and sporting demands.
Provides tools to develop the explosive actions needed for development of muscle mass and / or strength.
Supports faster acceleration for sprint starts and short bursts.
Enhances jumping performance: Helps coaches develop take-off power for sports involving vertical and horizontal jumps.
Develops change-of-direction skills: Complements technique training by improving braking control and powerful movement out of a turn.
Improves movement coaching: Creates opportunities to teach landing mechanics, body alignment and coordinated force production.

Enables individual progression: Allows coaches to adjust direction, speed, complexity and intensity as trainees develop.
Provides measurable outcomes: Jump distance, jump height and selected reactive-strength measures can help monitor progress.
Connects gym training with sport: Helps coaches integrate strength, power and movement skills into purposeful training programmes.
Supports workload management: Encourages planned exercise volumes, recovery periods and progression based on movement quality.
Broadens coaching capability: Equips trainers and coaches to prepare trainees for activities requiring explosive, coordinated and responsive movement.
Learning Outcomes
On completion, participants should be able to:
Explain the physiological and biomechanical principles of plyometric training.
Assess a trainee’s readiness for different levels of plyometric activity.
